The worn stairs lead up to open spaces on the second floor, that provided little personal space to the individual family members.
Removing only the existing closets and minimal other walls, the spaces are reconfigured to create the accommodations required by the family. The existing bathroom and most of the remaining finishes are maintained and refinished.
LE NOUVEAU PLAN
The master bedroom is moved to the front of the house and includes a sunny office nook adjacent to the balcony. A frosted glass paneled door separates the room from the rest of the floor while sharing the light with the center of the house. New full-height custom cabinets frame the sleeping area, providing efficient storage for clothes and other items.
The former master at the rear of the house is divided into two bedrooms for the teenage children, providing adequate space for both sleeping and studying.
A private office is defined in the central space, separated by insulated walls and doors that close it off from the rest of the house.
The existing dark stained floors are stripped and returned to a natural maple. New warm paint colours, as well as new lighting, doors and hardware and new windows and exterior doors complete the transformation.

L'ESCALIER ET LES ESPACES CENTRAUX
The stairs are rejuvenated with natural maple treads, risers and handrail. A semi-custom cabinet wrapped in maple provides both support and storage the at the top landing.
The office is appointed with a new skylight to bring in natural light. The room is closed by frosted glass paneled double doors, to close and share the light while providing privacy for concentrated work or to throw open to share the space with the rest of the floor.
LA CHAMBRE PRINCIPALE
The existing ceiling was removed and the existing vaulted space under the roof was exposed. The new ceiling was installed to follow the slope of the roof and extend the height of the room by several feet.
The master closet is designed as two walls of custom cabinets built around the bed, providing hanging and drawer storage, as well as storage above for less frequently accessed items. Other custom and prefabricated tall cabinets supply additional wardrobe storage.
Semi-custom built-in shelving wraps the wall near the french doors, to furnish storage for the office nook.
LES AUTRES CHAMBRES
The teen bedrooms employ tall prefabricated wardrobe cabinets for hanging storage, with finishes and colours selected by each one. The owner's existing furniture fits perfectly along the joining wall to supply drawer storage and study desks.
